Imagine being a kid right now…in 2020.
Thinking about life before the pandemic is something 4th grader Aaliyah does a lot. Her school, which had been meeting in-person, suddenly switched back to all-remote learning. Immediately cut-off from what little time she had with teachers and friends, she now begins her day at home, staring at her computer, feeling hopeless. She wonders, "When will things go back to normal? When can I stop feeling so stressed? What can I count on for next week? Next year?"
A lot of kids feel like Aaliyah right now…tired of dealing with constant change and uncertainty wondering when - or if - things will get better. It’s hard to stare at a screen all day and stay motivated to learn. She worries about falling behind in her schoolwork and preparing for 5th grade.
"Everything feels impossible," Aaliyah told us.
Aaliyah recalled her Junior Achievement experience from last year. "Every week we got to meet with our JA volunteer Ms. Silva and learn about jobs and how to make grown-up choices!." She especially loved the songs and games that helped her understand the lessons, adding, "Ms. Silva always played the games with us. It was so much fun." JA empowered her to learn critical life-skills and was a welcome escape from her regular school routine. "I learned so much about what I can be when I grow up and what I have to do to accomplish my dreams." she said.
We know that being personally connected to helping kids is important to you, and that looks a little different right now. As the year comes to a close, a lot is still uncertain for the future of our kids. But YOU can still help Aaliyah today. She needs you to ensure she can experience JA lessons this spring - in-person or virtually.
We need to raise $50,000 by December 31 to ensure Aaliyah, and kids like her, can have fun, consistent, hands-on learning experiences led by dedicated JA volunteers. The hope for something better for kids in 2021 depends on you today! Your gift will be put to work immediately, rekindling Aaliyah’s love of learning and motivating her to stay focused in school. With changes in schools still in flux, you provide the certainty and camaraderie of the classroom experience she’s been missing.
But…Aaliyah needs you to make that happen. Please make a gift today and help promise Aaliyah that better days are coming, even if they begin at her kitchen table. These days, it’s easy for Aaliyah to feel lost and hopeless. This moment will define her for years to come. Aaliyah needs your help to redefine this moment and you can do that by making a gift today.
Give the gift of hope by December 31 so Aaliyah can start the next semester leaving doubt behind and have the tools to fulfill her greatest potential. Your generosity today inspires confidence and certainty for Aaliyah.
